Labour’s Jonathan Ashworth found himself during a heated debate on GB News as he faced questions regarding the restoration of Diane Abbott’s Labour whip in light of alleged racist comments made about her by a Tory donor.

The controversy stems from comments attributed to Conservative donor Frank Hester in 2019, where he reportedly expressed derogatory sentiments towards Abbott, suggesting she “should be shot” and expressing animosity towards black women after seeing her on television.

Despite widespread condemnation of Hester’s remarks by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, the decision regarding Abbott’s return to the party remains pending, subject to a formal investigation.

Abbott had previously had her Labour whip withdrawn in 2023 following her comments in a letter to the Observer regarding racism faced by Jewish, Irish, and Traveller people.

During his appearance on GB News, Ashworth faced questioning from host Camilla Tominey regarding the calls for Abbott’s whip to be restored. Ashworth reiterated the importance of an independent process and emphasized that he would not preempt the outcome of that process.

Pressed by Camilla on his stance, Ashworth maintained his position, stressing the need for the independence of the investigative process and refraining from political interference.

However, Camilla challenged Ashworth, highlighting the concerns of some individuals who believe Abbott should not be readmitted to the party due to perceived racist remarks she has made about Jewish people.

The exchange underscored the complexities surrounding Abbott’s situation and the divergent opinions within the party regarding her potential reinstatement.

Ashworth’s refusal to take a definitive stance reflects the delicate balance Labour faces in navigating issues of accountability, fairness, and party unity.
