The Friends of Cedar Lake, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the urban lake in downtown Cedar Rapids, has decided to disband.

As part of their final act, the organization generously donated its remaining funds, $8,858.73, to the Cedar Rapids Parks Foundation.

This donation significantly contributes to the ongoing efforts to revitalize the lake, which is undergoing a comprehensive restoration as part of the connector initiative—a landmark public-private partnership in Cedar Rapids.

Established in 2014 as a 501(c)(3) organization, Friends of Cedar Lake brought together a diverse group of community members united by their shared desire to safeguard the lake for future generations.

Over the years, funds raised by the organization supported various initiatives, including the development of a master plan and the organization of events to raise awareness about the importance of preserving the lake’s natural beauty.

With the ConnectCR project gaining momentum, the vision outlined in the master plan is poised to become a reality. Felicia Wyrick, co-founder of Friends of Cedar Lake, expressed gratitude for the support received and highlighted the organization’s commitment to ensuring that the donated funds are used in alignment with the donors’ intentions.

As the master plan evolves with ongoing flood protection efforts, investments will be directed toward enhancing the lake’s ecosystem and improving visitor amenities.

Proposed enhancements include installing new fishing jetties to provide anglers with additional access points, restoring and reforestation of wetlands on the lake’s north shore, and implementing informational signage along the trail to educate visitors about the park’s flora and fauna.

Additionally, plans include the development of enhanced park entrances, a challenge course/playground, and floating islands to further enrich the recreational experience at Cedar Lake.

Beyond the revitalization of Cedar Lake, the ConnectCR initiative encompasses broader improvements to Cedar Rapids’ recreational infrastructure.

Notable projects include the construction of the Alliant Energy LightLine pedestrian-bike bridge, which will span the Cedar River and connect the vibrant Czech Village and New Bohemia District.

Council member Dale Todd, a longstanding advocate for Cedar Lake’s rejuvenation and a member of Friends of Cedar Lake emphasized the organization’s achievements and its decision to conclude its activities on a high note.

With construction phases underway, the focus has shifted towards aligning efforts with the ConnectCR initiative and collaborating closely with the City of Cedar Rapids to realize the shared vision for the community’s recreational spaces.
