Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has issued a directive to ban musical horns following the circulation of videos on social media depicting individuals dancing on roadsides to the tunes emanating from passing trucks.
Taking the reins of governance from his father, Hun Sen, who held power for 38 years, Hun Manet has instructed the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation and law enforcement agencies nationwide to promptly address any vehicles outfitted with musical horns. He emphasized the urgency of restoring standard honking mechanisms by removing the modified horns.
Although provincial authorities have already taken steps to enforce this measure, Hun Manet took to his Facebook page to publicly announce its implementation across the country. He expressed concern over recent social media posts showcasing “inappropriate activity” involving individuals, particularly youth and children, engaging in roadside dancing prompted by the musical tones emitted by truck horns.
Hun Manet underscored the adverse impact of such dancing on public order and highlighted the associated traffic risks, which endanger lives, including those of the dancers themselves. One particularly alarming video depicted three young people dancing in the midst of a road as a large trailer truck approached, setting a dangerous precedent.
In light of these concerns, Cambodians are now prohibited from engaging in street dancing.
