The Senedd has endorsed an independent commission’s recommendations to safeguard devolution and bolster Welsh democracy.
In what marked one of his final acts as first minister, Mark Drakeford spearheaded a debate concerning the independent commission’s findings on Wales’ constitutional future.
Led by Laura McAllister and Rowan Williams, the commission laid out a comprehensive set of ten recommendations designed to fortify Welsh governance. These proposals included devolving vital areas such as rail infrastructure, policing, probation, and youth justice.
Prof McAllister, an esteemed academic, and Dr Williams, a former Archbishop of Canterbury, meticulously examined three potential pathways: enhanced devolution, a federal UK structure, and independence. Despite delving into these alternatives, the commission refrained from outrightly endorsing any single option.
Offering the Welsh Government‘s formal response to the report, Mr Drakeford concurred with its overarching assertion that maintaining the status quo is untenable and does not provide a stable foundation for Wales’ future.
The Senedd’s backing of the commission’s recommendations underscores a collective recognition of the need for substantive reforms to Wales’ constitutional framework.
As the nation charts its course forward, the momentum behind these proposals signals a shared commitment to advancing Welsh democracy and securing its rightful place within the broader UK context.
