The United States has condemned President Vladimir Putin’s “war of choice” against Ukraine, estimating that it will cost Russia a staggering $1.3 trillion in previously anticipated economic growth through 2026.
Speaking at the 20th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin underscored the severe economic toll that Putin’s aggression has inflicted on Russia.
He highlighted the sacrifice made by Ukraine’s forces in resisting Russian aggression, noting that over 315,000 Russian troops have been killed or wounded in the conflict.
Austin revealed that Russia has squandered up to $211 billion on the unnecessary war with Ukraine, encompassing expenses for equipment, deployment, and maintenance. Despite this, Ukrainian defenders have continued to disrupt and weaken the Kremlin’s military capabilities.
The Secretary of Defense pointed out that Ukrainian forces have successfully neutralized 20 medium to sizeable Russian navy vessels and have consistently thwarted Russian warplanes with their antiaircraft defenses.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Austin and Air Force Gen. CQ Brown, Jr. emphasized that Putin’s ambitions extend beyond Ukraine. They warned that if Russia succeeds in Ukraine, it will embolden further aggression.
Austin expressed confidence in bipartisan support within Congress for passing a supplemental bill to sustain U.S. aid to Ukraine, reaffirming America’s commitment to assisting its ally.
During the meeting, representatives from more than 50 countries and organizations convened to coordinate aid, training, and capabilities for Ukraine.
General Brown noted that Ukrainian forces have successfully recaptured over half of the territory temporarily occupied by Russia in the early stages of the conflict, underscoring the resilience and determination of Ukraine’s defenders.
