On March 19, defense ministers and military leaders from 50 countries convened at the 20th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group alliance to synchronize efforts to support Ukraine’s security amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Led by Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, the Ukrainian delegation participated in discussions held at the Ramstein-Miesenbach Air Base in Germany. The discussions primarily focused on urgent measures to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
Addressing the acute shortage of ammunition in the Ukrainian Armed Forces and exploring ways to enhance air defense capabilities were among the key topics of discussion.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin reiterated the United States’ commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression despite funding challenges from Congress.
During the meeting, Austin highlighted the significant toll the war has taken on Russia, with estimates indicating substantial casualties and economic costs. Umerov emphasized the unity and active support demonstrated by the coalition of allies for Ukraine.
A primary focus of the discussions was ensuring the provision of ammunition to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, particularly artillery shells of various calibers. Germany pledged further military aid, including €500 million and thousands of rounds of ammunition.
Germany, Canada, and Finland also announced participation in a joint procurement initiative to acquire 800,000 artillery shells for Ukraine.

Kosovo also announced a second package of military aid for Ukraine, including mortar rounds, demonstrating ongoing support for Ukraine’s defense efforts. Estonia discussed options for sending a more considerable amount of ammunition to Ukraine and securing additional funds for this purpose.
Another crucial aspect discussed was strengthening Ukraine’s air defense systems, with assurances of increased missile supplies. Efforts to bolster Ukraine’s air superiority were emphasized, reflecting a shared objective among participating nations.
Discussions highlighted progress in the drone coalition, with new countries joining and contributing to the initiative. The alliance aims to provide drones to Ukraine and explore possibilities for investing in Ukrainian UAV production.
The meeting underscored the collective commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense and highlighted collaborative efforts to address immediate challenges and enhance long-term capabilities.
