Today, as we observe Blood Clot Awareness Month, I am honored to introduce the unveiling of our virtual blood clot toolkit, titled “Blood Clot Awareness, Action, and Advocacy: The Toolkit.” This toolkit is a crucial resource designed to raise awareness, promote action, and encourage advocacy surrounding the issue of blood clots.
First and foremost, let me emphasize the importance of awareness. In this toolkit, individuals will learn what constitutes a blood clot, its signs and symptoms, and the fact that blood clots do not discriminate – they can affect anyone. Shockingly, one American loses their life to a blood clot every six minutes.
Pregnant women, Black Americans, seniors, individuals with a family history, and those battling cancer are particularly vulnerable. However, it’s imperative to understand that blood clots are preventable and treatable, especially when detected early.
Secondly, we must take action. As a congresswoman and member of the Health Subcommittee, I find this mission both professional and deeply personal. I tragically lost my husband, Charles Rochester, to blood clots.
His passing inspired me to advocate for change, leading to the introduction of the Charles Rochester Blood Clot Prevention and Treatment Act. This bipartisan legislation aims to enhance public awareness, improve diagnoses and treatment, and advance our understanding of blood clot prevalence. By collectively taking action, we can save lives.
Lastly, advocacy plays a crucial role in driving change. I witnessed firsthand the impact of blood clots on my family when my father, battling cancer, developed a blood clot.
Recognizing the signs and symptoms, we were able to seek immediate medical attention, granting us precious additional time with him. Advocating for oneself or a loved one can be challenging, so this toolkit provides valuable advocacy resources.
In closing, I urge everyone to join us in spreading awareness, taking action, and advocating for change. The toolkit will be available after this event, and I encourage you to utilize it and share it widely. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against blood clots. Thank you.
