From the office of Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC): Last night, our office received a troubling voicemail that underscores the dangers of misinformation spread by platforms like TikTok.
This voicemail, which we believe is linked to TikTok’s misinformation campaign, contained a threat against elected officials, constituting a serious federal offense. The alignment of TikTok with the Chinese Communist regime highlights the urgent need to address the risks associated with its ownership.
The caller’s threatening message, which included explicit language and violent imagery, is deeply concerning. We cannot tolerate such behavior, especially when it targets individuals in public service. Threats against elected officials are not only unlawful but also undermine the democratic process and our nation’s values.
It’s clear that when TikTok spreads wrong information, it leads to serious problems like violence and scaring lawmakers. This shows how important it is to stop false information on social media and make sure those who threaten others are punished.
We want TikTok to act quickly to stop false information and make sure nobody uses it to start fights or do illegal things. We promise to keep everyone safe and work hard to fix this problem and stop it from happening again.
If you know anything about this scary voicemail or other bad stuff, please tell the police right away. We need to stop violence and scary behavior and keep our democracy and kindness strong.
