Former Manchester City Player Robinho Ordered to Serve 9-Year Prison Sentence for Rape

Robinho, ex-Manchester City player, must serve 9-year prison term for rape

Brazilian judges said Robinho must go to jail in Brazil because Italy’s court decision about his rape case is valid here too.

In 2017, an Italian court found Robinho and five other Brazilians guilty of raping a woman after giving her alcohol in a nightclub. They were confirmed guilty in 2020 and in 2022 Italy’s highest court also agreed.

Robinho, who played for famous teams like Real Madrid and Manchester City, lives in Brazil and denied the charges. Normally, Brazil doesn’t send its citizens to other countries for trial, so Italy asked Brazil to put Robinho in jail.

Robinho’s lawyer said he’s ready to face trial in Brazil but wants a new one because he thinks Brazil should handle his case. The first judge said Robinho should go to jail in Brazil or else there might be problems between Brazil and Italy.

But one judge disagreed, saying Brazil can’t jail someone for a crime in Italy. Another judge, a woman, agreed with the majority, saying Italy’s decision was fair.

Robinho lives near Sao Paulo and gave his passport to Brazilian authorities in 2023. He says he’s innocent and blames racism for his conviction.

During the court session, a prosecutor reminded everyone about some recordings where Robinho talked about the case with friends. In those recordings, Robinho said some vulgar things and joked about the situation.

Robinho became famous in Brazil when he helped Santos win big titles in 2002 and 2004.
