A big Scottish National Party (SNP) member criticized his own government for not fixing the Post Office mess in Scotland. Fergus Ewing said Scottish leaders are trying to start a fight with the UK government over laws to help the victims.
These laws passed in England and Wales don’t cover Scotland because of different rules. Even though the First Minister knew this would happen, he was still disappointed and asked the UK government to change its mind.
Ewing, who often disagrees with the First Minister, wants the Scottish government to act quickly to help the victims. He thinks arguing about rules is not helpful for them.
Myra Philp, one victim of the mess, wants the politicians to fix the problem fast. Her mom, Mary, was wrongly accused because of a computer mistake and couldn’t clear her name before she died.
The UK government made laws to clear victims’ names in England and Wales. But Scotland has its own rules, so it’s up to Scottish politicians to fix it.
Even though the Scottish government had known about this for a while, they still wanted UK laws to include Scotland. They say they’ll make their laws if the UK government doesn’t change its mind.
