Laura Parker, a former senior aide to Jeremy Corbyn, has encouraged voters to support the Green Party in Bristol Central, one of the party’s targeted seats currently held by Labour shadow cabinet minister Thangam Debbonaire.
Parker revealed this during a panel discussion, where she shared the stage with Green Party Deputy Leader Zack Polanski. She humorously remarked that she agreed with Polanski’s words and urged Bristol residents to vote Green if they’re in the area.
Polling data suggests that Debbonaire could have won the Bristol Central seat in 2019, but current projections indicate a potential victory for the Green Party. Polanski emphasized during his speech that neither of the two main parties presents real alternatives or concrete plans for meaningful change.
Parker and Polanski participated in a conference organized by various groups, including Another Europe is Possible and Compass. The event focused on progressive approaches to Brexit and featured speakers like former Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell and former International Development Secretary Clare Short.
Parker stressed the importance of progressives seizing opportunities to strengthen relationships with the EU. She highlighted a shift in public opinion, with 56% of people viewing Brexit unfavorably.
Recent developments, such as columnist Owen Jones leaving the Labour Party and advocating for independent and Green candidates, have sparked debate within Labour circles. Some critics view this move undermining Labour’s chances of electoral success, while others see it as a strategic error.
Parker defended her stance, emphasizing the need for Labour to take a more unambiguous stance on issues like the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza, workers’ rights, climate change, and economic reform.
Parker’s background includes serving as Jeremy Corbyn’s private secretary and as the national coordinator of Momentum. She is also a member of the national committee of Another Europe is Possible.
Labour Party rules prohibit members from supporting candidates or organizations that oppose Labour candidates or values. Meanwhile, recent reports of a Green councilor in Bristol being suspended and another local election candidate stepping down have added to the political dynamics in the area.
