The police in Northern Ireland have disclosed that a complaint led to the arrest of Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, the former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), regarding accusations of historical se*xual offenses in early March.
Donaldson stepped down following these allegations on Friday, with reports indicating he plans to challenge the charges vigorously. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) issued a statement to curb “unhelpful speculation” surrounding the case, clarifying that an investigation was promptly initiated upon receipt of the complaint.
Donaldson was taken into custody and formally charged on Thursday, March 28. Additionally, a 57-year-old woman faces charges of aiding and abetting concerning the same allegations.

The PSNI cautioned the public and media against speculative commentary, which it deemed unhelpful and inaccurate, potentially undermining the criminal justice process.
Donaldson has been a prominent figure in Northern Irish politics, leading the DUP since 2021 and serving as the Member of Parliament for Lagan Valley since 1997.
The 61-year-old is scheduled for a court appearance in Newry, Co Down, on April 24. Following these developments, he has been suspended from the DUP, although it is believed he retains his parliamentary seat.
