Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu successfully underwent hernia surgery on Sunday night, according to a statement from his doctors at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem. The medical team described Netanyahu’s health as “excellent” and reported that he was in recovery following the procedure.
Alon Pikarsky, the hospital’s director of general surgery, confirmed that Netanyahu was awake, conversing with his family, and progressing well post-surgery. He assured us that the operation would proceed according to plan.
The decision for surgery came after doctors discovered a hernia during a routine examination on Saturday, as announced by Netanyahu’s office. The Prime Minister, aged 74, underwent the procedure under complete anesthesia.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Yariv Levin temporarily assumed Netanyahu’s duties during his hospitalization. Addressing reporters in a press conference on Sunday, Netanyahu expressed confidence in a successful recovery, stating, “I assure you that I will get through this treatment successfully and return to action very quickly.”
This surgery marks Netanyahu’s second hernia operation, with the previous one performed in 2013 for an umbilical hernia. The Mayo Clinic explains that a hernia occurs when tissue, such as part of the intestine, protrudes through a weakened area in the abdominal muscles.
Netanyahu also underwent surgery earlier in July, during which he received a pacemaker. The Prime Minister’s medical procedures highlight the importance of timely health interventions, ensuring that leaders maintain optimal health while fulfilling their duties to the nation.
