A tragic crash in South Carolina claimed the life of a teenage girl and left two others hospitalized, officials confirmed. The victim, identified as 17-year-old Grace I. Segovia from Moncks Corner, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, announced Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell in a news release on Monday.
The collision, involving two vehicles, occurred in Berkeley County, according to Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover of the South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that it happened around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday when Segovia drove a 2020 Chevrolet Traverse east on Treeland Drive in Ladson.
Near the intersection with College Park Road, Segovia attempted to pass a 2017 BMW SUV traveling in the same direction on Treeland Drive. The two vehicles collided, veered off the right side of the road, and struck a tree.
Sadly, Segovia succumbed to her injuries at the scene, the coroner’s office stated. The BMW had two occupants, both of whom sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital. Details regarding their conditions were not provided.
No additional injuries were reported, and it remains unclear whether seat belts were used during the crash. The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Berkeley County EMS, and Caromi Fire Department responded to the scene. The Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office continue to investigate the incident.
On Wednesday, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety recorded 193 fatalities on state roads in 2024. In comparison, there were 999 crash-related deaths in South Carolina the previous year. Berkeley County alone has reported at least seven fatalities in crashes in 2024, with 60 deaths recorded in the county in 2023, according to DPS data.
