The Stanley Quencher phenomenon isn’t confined to social media; it’s making headlines for another reason in Northern California – theft.
In the latest incident, an individual broke into a Target located at 100 Westlake Center in Daly City during the early hours of March 26. The stolen loot amounted to nearly $500 worth of Stanley products, valued at $45 each at Target. Matthew Ciucci, speaking on behalf of the Daly City Police Department, revealed that the break-in occurred between 3:30 and 5:05 a.m. following forced entry into the store.
While specific details about the method of entry remain undisclosed by the department, according to reports by KRON-TV, a man reportedly pried open the rear gate of the Target shortly before 3:30 a.m. Subsequently, the individual fled along Lake Merced Boulevard after committing the burglary.
The police response came at 11 a.m. following the discovery of the burglary by Target staff, who promptly notified 911. The investigation into the incident remains active, as confirmed by Ciucci.
This isn’t the only instance of Stanley Cup-related theft. A separate incident occurred in the Sacramento suburb of Roseville on Jan. 17, where a 23-year-old woman was apprehended for stealing 65 Stanley products valued at nearly $2,500 from a store. Upon being pulled over by an officer on Highway 65, the stolen items were discovered in her vehicle, leading to her arrest on suspicion of grand theft.

However, some cup-related incidents took a violent turn. On March 26, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office arrested two suspects for attempting to steal a limited-edition pink, 40-ounce tumbler released by Stanley in partnership with Starbucks on Jan. 3.
The incident occurred at the Cupertino Target on Stevens Creek Blvd. As customers queued to purchase the coveted cup, a couple in their mid-20s allegedly attempted to cut the line after being informed by Target staff that the product was unavailable. The male suspect, aged 26, purportedly vaulted over the counter at Target’s Starbucks, displacing the barista to seize one of the cups.
His attempt to abscond was thwarted by a customer blocking the exit, resulting in the man being tackled to the ground. Meanwhile, the 24-year-old female suspect, identified as his girlfriend, allegedly assaulted the customer and made a grab for a bag believed to contain another Stanley cup before fleeing the scene with her male counterpart.
Both suspects were apprehended and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of robbery.
