A man recently received a suspended prison sentence for making offensive remarks about MP Clive Lewis, who had expressed support for a transgender woman facing online harassment for breastfeeding.
The individual, Paul Fogg, admitted to sending offensive messages violating the Malicious Communications Act 1988. This incident sheds light on the complexities of online harassment, the impact of social media on public discourse, and the legal ramifications of such behavior.
Last November, Fogg pleaded guilty to two counts of sending offensive messages and was sentenced at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on April 3. His actions stemmed from a post by MP Clive Lewis expressing solidarity with trans woman Mika Minio-Paluello, who had faced a harassment campaign for breastfeeding her child.

Lewis signed a petition in support of Minio-Paluello, prompting Fogg to lash out on Facebook, labeling Lewis as a “nonce and a paedophile” and accusing him of neglecting child safety. Fogg further escalated by leaving a voicemail at Lewis’s office with derogatory comments about breastfeeding.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Fogg was struggling with personal challenges. He had been consuming alcohol heavily and recently left his job due to health issues.
His lawyer, Ian Fisher, highlighted Fogg’s social isolation and depression, noting that he was influenced by anti-trans comments online, which exacerbated his behavior.

The court recognized the severity of Fogg’s actions, describing them as “abhorrent” and “disturbing.” However, Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring acknowledged that Fogg’s behavior was a result of his isolation, depression, and alcohol consumption.
Goldspring emphasized that while public figures like MPs may face scrutiny, they are still entitled to protection from harassment and abuse.
As a consequence of his actions, Fogg received a six-week suspended prison sentence lasting a year. He was also ordered to attend 20 rehabilitation sessions, pay compensation to MP Clive Lewis, cover legal costs, and adhere to a ban on contacting Lewis or his constituency office.
