The National Energy Skills Accelerator (NESA) recently welcomed Scotland’s Minister for Energy, Just Transition, and Fair Work, Gillian Martin, to Aberdeen for discussions on the accomplishments of NESA’s Just Transition Fund (JTF) project in the North East and Moray regions.
NESA has been making huge strides in supporting individuals in accessing fully funded courses focused on energy transition during the 2023/24 period. These efforts are aligned with industry requirements for transitioning to renewable energy sources and achieving sustainability goals.

During the discussions, it was highlighted that NESA is set to assist more than 700 individuals in accessing these fully funded courses. Notably, nearly half of these courses are newly developed, specifically designed to meet the changing needs of the energy transition industry.
This strategic approach ensures that individuals are equipped with the latest skills and capabilities required for the ongoing energy transition efforts.
The Insight on Innovative Tools Aiming Individuals to Visualization
In addition to course offerings, NESA is committed to improving communication regarding energy-related job opportunities and career pathways. With support from the Scottish Funding Council’s Regional Pathfinder initiative, NESA is gearing up to launch a pilot web-based tool focused on energy career pathways.
This innovative tool, set to debut later this month, will enable individuals to visualize their potential career paths within the energy sector. It will also highlight various training opportunities and pathways for individuals looking to enter or advance in the energy industry.
Established in Aberdeen in July 2021, NESA plays a pivotal role in preparing the workforce for the energy transition and facilitating access to new skills essential for advancing the net-zero agenda.
NESA operates through a collaborative effort involving Robert Gordon University, the University of Aberdeen, and the North East of Scotland College. Key regional partners, including Energy Transition Zone Ltd and Skills Development Scotland, support NESA’s initiatives.

Minister Gillian Martin expressed the Scottish Government’s commitment to supporting NESA’s endeavors through a £1 million investment in the pilot energy skills program.
This funding has enabled hundreds of individuals to access free training courses, facilitating their transition to careers in the renewables sector. Minister Martin emphasized the importance of sustainable, low-carbon jobs in shaping a green economy and contributing to the vast net-zero transition.
Professor Paul de Leeuw, Chair of the NESA Board, commended NESA’s progress in energy skills development since its inception. The successful uptake of transition training by over 700 professionals across 37 energy courses and programs during 2023/24 reflects the positive impact of NESA’s initiatives.
Looking ahead, NESA aims to build on this momentum and funding to ensure continued success in preparing the future energy workforce throughout 2024/25 and beyond.
