A legislative proposal to ensure that public schools in Louisiana offer free menstrual products to students is making progress in the state legislature.

Rep. Aimee Freeman, D-New Orleans, brought forth the proposal, which hinges on whether the state allocates its funding. Without designated funds, the requirement for schools to provide these essential products would not be enforceable.

Rep. Freeman highlighted that the cost associated with the bill would be minimal for the state. This marks the third attempt in recent years to pass such a measure, with previous efforts typically faltering in the Senate.

During a recent committee session, several young students advocated for the bill, emphasizing the importance of menstrual products for their health and education. They argued that easy access to these school supplies would enhance students’ ability to concentrate and learn.

The proposal was successfully advanced after a House Education Committee vote, where a margin of 9-2 approved it. Rep. Beryl Amedee, R-Houma, and Rep. Kathy Edmonston, R-Gonzales, cast opposing votes.

With this hurdle cleared, the bill now advances to the House Appropriations Committee for further consideration. This move represents a critical step towards addressing a fundamental need that impacts the academic performance and well-being of countless students across Louisiana.
