Last month, during President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, former President Donald Trump made an unfounded accusation, claiming, without proof, that Biden was under the influence of cocaine. Trump’s assertion came despite widespread acclaim for Biden’s performance during the speech.
Trump discussed drug testing before future debates in an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. He also described Biden as being “higher than a kite” on the day of the March 7 address, stating that Biden started the speech “all jacked up” but was “fading fast” as it progressed. Forbes noted that this claim reflects a rumor without basis circulating among right-wing online communities.
The Biden campaign previously mocked Trump’s 2020 proposal for drug testing before debates, humorously suggesting that Trump thought his best argument for a discussion was based on “urine.”
Recently, Trump tried again to link an unrelated incident – the discovery of cocaine in a part of the White House open to visitors last year – to Biden’s debate performance, suggesting to Hewitt, “I think something is going on there.”
Ammar Moussa, a spokesman for the Biden campaign, dismissed Trump’s remarks as “a bizarre outburst,” according to Forbes. Both Biden and Trump are known to abstain from alcohol, and there is no substantiated evidence to support the notion that Biden uses drugs. Moussa added that Trump’s campaign falters because the former president’s controversial positions alienate voters.
