British lawmakers have been urged to report to the police despite revelations of a potential se*xting scam targeting them. William Wragg, who heads the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee in Parliament, admitted to disclosing the personal phone numbers of some colleagues to an individual he met on a gay dating app.
According to Wragg, the person who possessed compromising material on him made him feel manipulated and scared, leading him to share the numbers. Wragg’s actions have sparked concern and calls for action.
Treasury Minister Gareth Davies emphasized the seriousness of the situation and encouraged those affected to seek assistance from law enforcement. The se*xting scam, described as “spear phishing,” involves scammers posing as trusted individuals to obtain personal or sensitive information.
The revelation follows speculation fueled by reports that various current and former parliamentarians had been contacted by an unknown number on WhatsApp, with attempts made to extract personal or sensitive information. Some targeted individuals allegedly received explicit images and responded in kind.
Authorities have stressed the importance of reporting such incidents promptly in response to the situation. Leicestershire Police confirmed an investigation into a case of malicious communications after a local lawmaker received unsolicited messages last month.
