In a lengthy statement issued on Friday, independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. hinted at the possibility that the prosecution of individuals involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol protests could be politically motivated, aligning himself partially with the perspective of former President Donald Trump and his allies.

Kennedy’s statement followed criticism he faced for a fundraising email that portrayed the protesters sympathetically, describing them as “activists” whose constitutional liberties were infringed upon.

Although his campaign claimed to have distanced itself from the contractor responsible for the email, Kennedy’s subsequent statement echoed a similar sentiment. Rather than outright rejecting the notion of unjust prosecution, Kennedy expressed concerns about potential political motives driving the vigor of the prosecutions.

While acknowledging Trump’s role in the events leading up to Jan. 6, Kennedy announced his intention, if elected president, to appoint a special counsel to investigate whether Trump allies were unfairly targeted for prosecution. He also emphasized his commitment to addressing any injustices uncovered during the investigation.

Despite initially stating that the protesters did not carry weapons, Kennedy later corrected himself, acknowledging that some individuals had indeed been convicted of bringing firearms into the Capitol and using other makeshift armaments to attack law enforcement officers.

He condemned such behavior as inexcusable, clarifying that he had never downplayed the seriousness of the riot or any crimes committed during the events of Jan. 6.

Kennedy’s remarks come despite ongoing legal proceedings against hundreds of individuals charged in connection with the Capitol attack, with over 1,000 already pleading guilty or being convicted of various offenses.

He portrayed Trump as a victim of what he perceives as a politically motivated government, echoing Trump’s own assertions of corruption and alleging the weaponization of government against him.

As a prominent figure known for his activism and legal background, Kennedy’s statements have drawn scrutiny and criticism from Democrats and their allies, who fear his candidacy may divide the anti-Trump coalition and inadvertently aid Trump’s reelection bid.

However, Kennedy’s supporters view him as a champion for causes such as environmentalism and vaccine safety, highlighting his appeal to segments of the population distrustful of mainstream institutions.

Kennedy’s associations with individuals involved in the Jan. 6 events, as well as his past involvement in anti-vaccine activism, have raised concerns among Trump allies and critics alike.

Despite these controversies, Kennedy remains a polarizing figure whose candidacy has the potential to influence the political landscape before the presidential election.
