Police in Vermont are searching for a suspect accused of igniting a fire outside Senator Bernie Sanders’ office on Friday. The incident caused minor damage, with no reported injuries.
According to authorities, an unidentified male sprayed a potential accelerant on the office door, setting it ablaze before fleeing the scene. The suspect remains at large, and investigators have not determined a motive for the act.
Burlington police stated that the fire affected the door and vestibule, posing a risk to staff members in the office. The sprinkler system activated and helped contain the fire, preventing further damage.
Earlier that day, the Burlington Fire Department responded to a call reporting a fire near the vestibule, elevator, and entrance door of Sanders’ third-floor office. While the office door sustained moderate fire damage, extensive water damage affected much of the third floor, evacuating Sanders’ office and adjacent spaces.
A spokesperson for Sanders has not yet commented on the incident. Sanders was not present in the office at the time of the incident. Copyright 2024 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed without permission.
