Former Representative Pete King criticized Special Counsel Jack Smith’s opposition to potential jury instructions regarding the Presidential Records Act in former President Donald Trump’s records case.

King accused Smith of attempting to “railroad” Trump through the trial, especially with the election looming. He asserted that there are legitimate legal issues at play, given that the Presidential Records Act is a civil, not criminal, law.

He argued that Trump should be able to raise this law as part of his defense, suggesting Smith’s refusal to acknowledge these problems reveals a bias against Trump.

Additionally, former Georgia Representative Jack Kingston discussed the case related to Trump’s business records presided over by Judge Juan Merchan, suggesting Merchan should recuse himself due to perceived bias, highlighted by his daughter’s social media activity.

Kingston labeled the ongoing case as a “zombie case,” suggesting it had been revived for political reasons after initially being investigated years prior without resulting in charges. He criticized the prosecutorial approach as excessively aggressive and politically motivated.

Both King and Kingston’s comments reflect a broader criticism among some Republicans of the legal challenges facing Trump, framing them as part of a politically driven effort to undermine him. These viewpoints contribute to the contentious and polarized discussion surrounding Trump’s legal battles and the intersection of law, politics, and the judiciary’s role.
