In response to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s attempt to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson over potential votes on Ukraine aid and the reauthorization of surveillance tool 702, Rep. French Hill emphasized the importance of standing against authoritarian actions, particularly those of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Hill highlighted bipartisan support for aiding Ukraine and opposing Putin’s actions, stressing that it is not in America’s interest for Putin to succeed in Europe or the Far East.
Regarding the reauthorization of surveillance tool 702, which is set to expire soon, Hill expressed confidence in garnering support for its renewal.
He emphasized the critical role that 702 surveillance plays in national security and mentioned bipartisan reforms to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA) that will accompany its renewal.
Hill also discussed the timeline for voting on Ukraine aid, stating that he expects Johnson to prioritize it after addressing FISA-related matters. He emphasized the urgency of passing the supplemental appropriations for Ukraine, Taiwan, and Israel, particularly given the looming deadline of April 19.
Additionally, Hill voiced his support for efforts to reopen the Baltimore bridge, citing the collapse of the Interstate 40 bridge over the Mississippi River in Memphis as a precedent. He emphasized the need for collaboration between states and the federal government to ensure the prompt restoration of critical infrastructure.
