A Mexican national, Caleb Eduardo Gomez-Sanchez, received a 324-month prison sentence in a Del Rio federal court for intending to distribute methamphetamine.

The incident occurred on March 2, 2021, when Gomez-Sanchez tried to enter the U.S. from Mexico through the Eagle Pass port of entry. Initially complying, he later attempted to flee back to Mexico after being asked to remove his jacket during a secondary inspection.

In his escape, Gomez-Sanchez rammed his vehicle into a parked CBP unit, injuring two officers inside, before crashing into a concrete barrier at the Mexican port of entry. Mexican authorities promptly returned him to U.S. custody.

During the incident, CBP Officers found a sock in Gomez-Sanchez’s coat pocket containing approximately 64.48 grams of methamphetamine hydrochloride with a purity level of about 99%. Gomez-Sanchez pleaded guilty on Sept. 13, 2021, to possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza for the Western District of Texas commended the diligence of CBP Officers at Eagle Pass and Mexican law enforcement for their cooperation.

Special Agent in Charge Craig S. Larrabee for Homeland Security Investigations San Antonio emphasized that actions endangering law enforcement and public safety are unacceptable and will face prosecution. HSI and CBP jointly investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Katy Garner handling the prosecution.
