President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have launched the “Out for Biden-Harris” initiative aimed at mobilizing LGBTQ+ voters ahead of the upcoming election. Campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez emphasized the high stakes for LGBTQ+ Americans, portraying Donald Trump and his allies as threats to LGBTQ+ rights and history. Rodriguez highlighted Biden and Harris’s commitment to fighting for the freedom and dignity of all Americans, including advocating for the passage of the Equality Act.
A promotional video for the initiative features notable figures like Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, and Assistant Secretary for Health Rachel Levine, showcasing the administration’s inclusion of LGBTQ+ leaders at various levels. Rodriguez underscored the importance of LGBTQ+ voters, stating their critical role in securing victory in 2020 and their potential significance in the upcoming election.
The Out for Biden-Harris initiative plans to conduct virtual relational organizing training for new volunteers targeting battleground voters. It will also utilize messengers such as drag queen performer “Brita Filter” to engage with the community. Events are scheduled in key swing states like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan, aiming to strengthen support for the Biden-Harris ticket.
Several prominent LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, including the Equality PAC, Human Rights Campaign PAC, and the National Center for Transgender Equality Action Fund, endorsed the Biden-Harris campaign for the 2024 election. Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson emphasized the urgent need for the administration’s leadership, citing the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ Americans.
A Gallup poll released in March revealed that over 7 percent of all adults and 22 percent of Generation Z in the United States identify with a sexual orientation other than heterosexual. These statistics highlight the significance of LGBTQ+ voters as a demographic and underscore the importance of targeted outreach efforts by political campaigns like Out for Biden-Harris.
