Former President Donald Trump recently urged the Arizona Legislature and Governor Katie Hobbs to swiftly address the Arizona Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a pre-statehood law from 1864 that bans abortion.

Trump expressed his belief on his Truth Social platform that the court’s decision was excessive and advocated for a sensible and compassionate legislative response.

Trump’s remarks came during growing debates over abortion rights in the United States following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade.

This ruling has shifted the responsibility for abortion legislation to the states, sparking a variety of responses across the country. In Arizona, this has led to the reinstatement of an archaic law that completely prohibits abortion, prompting discussions on its appropriateness and relevance in contemporary society.

In his comments, Trump did not specify whether he supports a full repeal of the Arizona law. However, he reiterated his position that abortion regulation should be handled at the state level, emphasizing the importance of including exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother in such laws.

He accused Democrats of holding extreme positions on abortion, alleging they support terminations up until birth and, in some cases, post-birth executions—claims that are highly controversial and contested.

State GOP Rep. Alexander Kolodin also weighed in, suggesting that Republican lawmakers should prepare to act if Democrats attempt to pass what he described as a “radical initiative” on abortion.

Kolodin proposed a potential ballot measure that would impose certain restrictions on abortion, such as a 15-week limit if the Democrats’ initiative were to succeed.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris, who visited Arizona following the court ruling, criticized the decision as a product of the conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court, which was established during Trump’s presidency. She argued that Trump’s appointments to the court paved the way for more restrictive abortion laws across the United States.

Harris also accused Trump of being willing to sign a national abortion ban despite his stated preference for state-level regulation—a claim Trump’s campaign has labeled as dishonest.

The ongoing debate highlights the deep divisions in American politics over abortion, with implications for upcoming elections and the broader discourse on women’s rights and state governance. As this issue continues to reveal, it will likely remain a central topic in national and state political arenas.
