Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) criticized a joint press conference held by former President Donald Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on “election integrity,” calling it “absurd” given Trump’s indictments over 2020 election interference.
Swalwell likened it to “having to listen to a lecture by Bonnie and Clyde on bank security,” highlighting the irony of their discussion on election integrity.
During the press conference at Mar-a-Lago, Johnson discussed legislation aimed at preventing noncitizens from voting illegally.
However, Swalwell pointed out that the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 already prohibits foreign nationals from voting in federal elections, making the proposed legislation redundant. He dismissed it as a non-issue.
The joint appearance coincided with tensions within the Republican Party, as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) called for Johnson’s removal as Speaker, citing concerns about his fitness for the role.
Trump, however, expressed support for Johnson, commending his performance despite challenging circumstances.
Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) suggested that Trump’s endorsement could bolster Johnson’s position as Speaker, particularly among members of the House Freedom Caucus.
