According to Harvard Law professor emeritus Alan Dershowitz, the United States and Israel possess a unique opportunity to instigate regime change and quell the ongoing violence in the Middle East rather than focusing on de-escalation efforts between Israel and Iran.
Dershowitz asserted during an interview with Newsmax’s “The Count” that cooperation between the U.S. and Israel could facilitate the overthrow of the Iranian government, a move he believes would garner widespread support from both Iranians and various Arab nations in the region.
Dershowitz characterized Iran’s recent drone launches as a declaration of war against Israel and suggested that with U.S. assistance, Iran’s regime could be toppled, potentially dismantling its nuclear arsenal in the process.
He argued that such action would not only eliminate threats posed by Iran and its proxies like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis but also pave the way for peace in the region.
While Dershowitz advocated for a more aggressive approach, he criticized President Joe Biden’s stance, accusing him of aiming to narrow the scope of the conflict rather than seizing the opportunity for broader intervention.
He contended that many Iranians yearn for liberation from their oppressive government and emphasized the need to capitalize on this sentiment.
Dershowitz maintained that widening the conflict would not necessitate American military involvement, suggesting that Israel could lead the charge with logistical support from the U.S. He emphasized that Iran’s history of aggression against Israel, coupled with its pursuit of a theocratic regime, warrants a decisive response.
In Dershowitz’s view, retaliatory measures by Israel against Iran would not only bring about peace in the Middle East but also signal the end of militant groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, which have long posed security threats to the region.
He urged policymakers not to squander the opportunity presented by Iran’s belligerence and emphasized the potential benefits of decisive action.
