Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, issued a statement condemning Iran’s attack on Israel on Saturday, placing some blame on the Biden administration’s policy decisions.
“Iran has besieged Israel and has been launching attacks on our Israeli allies from multiple fronts for months. They’ve carried out assaults from Syria, Iraq, Yemen, the West Bank, Hezbollah-controlled Lebanon, and now, directly from Iranian territory,” Cruz’s statement began.
Cruz criticized the Biden administration for policies that, in his view, facilitated Iran’s actions. He pointed to fiscal relief measures that he claimed enabled Iran to carry out Saturday’s assault, stating, “These attacks are enabled and financed by deliberate policy choices made by Joe Biden and Biden officials, who have allowed roughly $100 billion to flow to Iran since 2021. Americans and Israelis have been made catastrophically more vulnerable by these policies.”
At around 4:30 p.m. ET in the United States, Iran initiated a series of drone attacks in retaliation for the killing of Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a top Iranian Quds Force general responsible for military operations in Lebanon and Syria.
In response, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, vowed revenge for the strike and threatened direct attacks on Israel.
Cruz concluded his statement by reaffirming America’s commitment to Israel. “Nevertheless, there is no doubt that Iran has made a grave error in attacking America’s closest ally in the Middle East. Israel will emerge from this crisis stronger. As I have always done, I stand with Israel and support any measures it takes to defend itself.”
