Authorities announced on Monday that the body of a fourth individual, who perished in the Baltimore bridge collapse last month, has been recovered from the scene.
According to a statement from the Key Bridge Response Unified Command, teams successfully retrieved the body of one of the victims on Sunday. At the request of the family, the identity of the victim has not been disclosed.
Col. Roland L. Butler Jr., superintendent of the Maryland Department of State Police, expressed condolences for the lives lost and emphasized the commitment to exhaust all resources in the recovery operation.
The recovery effort gained momentum after salvage teams identified a missing construction vehicle believed to be submerged beneath the bridge. Maryland State Police, along with the FBI and Maryland Transportation Authority Police, subsequently located a deceased victim trapped inside the vehicle.
Family members of the victim were notified of the discovery on Monday.
The bridge collapse occurred when a shipping vessel named the Dali lost power while exiting Baltimore Harbor late last month, resulting in a collision with the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The tragic incident claimed the lives of six of the eight construction workers present on the bridge that night.
In response to the incident, the Coast Guard initiated efforts to recover the bodies of the victims. Additionally, reports from The Washington Post and The Associated Press indicate that the FBI has launched an investigation into the matter. FBI agents were reportedly present on the cargo ship involved in the collision on Monday.
