President Biden has declined to appear before House impeachment investigators, delivering a letter through an attorney on Monday asserting that the investigation is effectively closed.
In the letter addressed to House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.), Richard Sauber, special counsel to the president, criticized the ongoing impeachment inquiry, stating that it has failed to uncover any wrongdoing by President Biden. Sauber accused the committee of persisting with false allegations despite ample evidence to the contrary.
Comer’s March letter to President Biden contained several dubious claims aimed at linking the president to his family members’ business dealings, particularly focusing on Biden’s tenure as vice president in Ukraine.
Sauber pointed to recent developments, including the arrest of a former FBI informant indicted for fabricating allegations against Biden, to challenge the credibility of the investigation.
Sauber also highlighted discussions among Republicans about making criminal referrals from the investigation instead of pursuing charges through impeachment, suggesting that the impeachment investigation is effectively concluded.
The impeachment inquiry has lost momentum in the House in recent weeks, with waning support among GOP members and increased skepticism about the evidence gathered against President Biden. Democrats have pressed Comer to specify any crimes Biden may be accused of.
Comer criticized President Biden’s refusal to testify publicly, drawing parallels to his son Hunter Biden’s reluctance to testify in a hearing after providing closed-door testimony.
Comer questioned President Biden’s interactions with his son’s business associates, listing individuals he wished to question, including Mykola Zlochevsky, the head of a Ukrainian energy company.
Despite the invitation, President Biden’s decision not to testify raises questions about the transparency of his administration and its handling of allegations related to his family’s business activities. Comer expressed disappointment at the White House’s reluctance to address the questions posed to President Biden.
