House Bill 183, known as The Protect All Students Act, is set to be considered by the Ohio House of Representatives next week. This bill, which was approved by the House Higher Education Committee with a vote of 10-5, aims to mandate single-sex bathrooms in public schools and universities across the state.

State Rep. Adam Bird, a Republican from New Richmond, emphasized the bill’s focus on student protection, asserting that it should not be viewed as a controversial issue.

According to Bird, many Ohioans are concerned about allowing individuals of the opposite sex into restrooms or locker rooms in their local schools. He believes that The Protect All Students Act will alleviate difficulties for school administrators and establish consistent policies statewide.

In addition to requiring single-sex bathrooms, the legislation would prevent educational service centers from permitting biological females to share accommodations with biological males.

State Rep. Beth Lear, a Republican from Galena, highlighted the bill’s aim to ensure the safety of children in private spaces such as restrooms, locker rooms, and overnight accommodations.

The proposed legislation reflects ongoing debates surrounding gender identity, privacy, and safety in public facilities, particularly in educational settings.

If passed, The Protect All Students Act would establish clear guidelines for restroom and locker room usage, with the intention of providing a safer environment for students across Ohio.
