Senate Republicans on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee are gearing up for what Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., described as a “mini impeachment trial” when Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas appears before the panel on Thursday.
Marshall shared his insights on “Wake Up America,” following the Senate’s dismissal of charges against Mayorkas the previous day, which included allegations of failing to enforce immigration laws and lying to Congress.
Marshall emphasized the opportunity to question Mayorkas during the committee hearing, noting that senators like Rand Paul, Ron Johnson, Rick Scott, Josh Hawley, and himself are expected to engage in robust discussions. He anticipated “gunpowder” moments as they aim to condense the trial into about an hour.
Expressing disappointment in the lack of a full Senate impeachment trial, Marshall criticized senators from purple states who voted against holding such a trial. He accused them of betraying their moderate claims and undermining the Constitution by voting with a liberal stance.
Referring to a CBS News interview with Mayorkas, where the secretary asserted that only Congress can change the immigration system, Marshall dismissed Mayorkas’s remarks as aligning with President Joe Biden’s policies.
Marshall suggested that Americans are aware of the administration’s approach to immigration and emphasized that policy changes could address the migrant crisis.
Marshall concluded by asserting that the ultimate judgment on the administration’s handling of immigration would come in November, hinting at the upcoming elections as the decisive moment for holding the administration accountable. He implied that voters would have the opportunity to voice their opinions on the matter through their ballots.
