British Physician Dr. Hilary Cass, author of a recent report on transgender care in the UK known as the “Cass Review,” has faced threats and intimidation from activists who oppose her findings. The review highlighted deficiencies in the evidence base for gender care in young people and criticized the toxic public discourse surrounding gender issues.
Dr. Cass revealed the personal toll of the backlash, stating that she now avoids using public transportation due to threats from activists. She described the messages she received as “vile” and has sought security advice to ensure her safety.
Expressing frustration with the criticism she has faced, Dr. Cass emphasized that much of it is based on misinformation. She argued that undermining a report focused on children’s healthcare puts vulnerable youth at risk.
The Cass Report provided over 32 recommendations to the NHS to improve transgender youth healthcare, particularly focusing on the prescription of hormones for puberty suppression or gender transition. It criticized certain aspects of the medical field as operating on “shaky foundations.”
In response to the report’s findings, NHS England has announced plans for a second appraisal of adult gender clinics, following a similar format to the Cass Review. However, Dr. Cass stated that she will not participate in the adult report due to the abuse she has endured.
The situation underscores the challenges faced by healthcare professionals engaged in controversial research and highlights the need for constructive dialogue and evidence-based policymaking in the field of transgender healthcare.
