Rep. Eric Burlison, a Republican from Missouri, voiced his frustration with the lack of action on the U.S. southern border by President Joe Biden and the Democrats, stating that the only way to compel them to address the issue is by taking decisive action.
In an interview with Newsmax on Friday, Burlison emphasized the need for Republicans to push for border security measures through legislation. He highlighted the missed opportunity faced by Republicans going into Saturday, particularly in the Democrat-controlled Senate, where action on border security is unlikely.
Burlison, who serves on the Oversight and Accountability Committee, suggested that Republicans should incorporate border language into must-pass bills or bills like the Ukraine supplemental, which the Democrats are eager to pass.
By attaching border security measures to such legislation, Burlison argued, Republicans could compel action from their Democratic counterparts.
The House recently voted to advance a foreign aid bill, with Speaker Mike Johnson proposing separate legislation to address funding for Ukraine, Israel, and other allies.
However, some Republicans have expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of provisions addressing border security, leading to calls for Johnson’s removal from office by lawmakers such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Rep. Paul Gosar, and Rep. Thomas Massie.
