A recent poll reveals that Americans are divided on whether former President Trump will be convicted in his ongoing New York hush-money case. The Economist/YouGov poll found that nearly a quarter of Americans (24%) believe Trump will be found guilty, 36% think he won’t, and 39% are uncertain.
Additionally, the poll shows that 43% of Americans think Trump should be convicted, 37% disagree, and 20% are unsure. This poll comes as Trump’s trial, a historic first for an American president, gets underway.
He faces 34 counts of falsifying business records related to reimbursements to his former attorney, Michael Cohen, who paid a porn actress to keep quiet about an alleged affair with Trump before the 2016 election.
Trump has downplayed the reimbursements as a “legal expense” and shifted some blame to his accountants. A separate Yahoo News/YouGov poll found that 57% of Americans consider falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments a “serious crime.”
The Economist/YouGov poll was conducted from April 14-16 and has a margin of error of 3.2%, with 1,574 respondents.
