A prominent Republican Jewish organization has become the latest group to support a primary challenge to Representative Bob Good (R-Va.). The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) announced on Monday that it is endorsing state Senator John McGuire (R) in the Republican congressional primary for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District.
The RJC cited Good’s vote against a foreign aid package on Saturday, which included funding for Ukraine, Israel, and humanitarian aid for Gaza. The RJC’s CEO, Matt Brooks, stated that Good’s vote was “shameful” and showed that he is not a true friend of Israel. Brooks added that the vote exposed those who are not supportive of Israel’s survival.
The House of Representatives voted on Saturday to pass a foreign aid package to the Senate, which includes $61 billion for Ukraine, $26 billion for Israel, and $8 billion for the Indo-Pacific region. Of the $26 billion allocated for Israel, $9.2 billion is designated for humanitarian assistance in Gaza.
Good stated that he opposed the legislation because it included $95 billion in additional, unpaid-for spending, but emphasized that his support for Israel’s right to defend itself is unwavering.
However, Good claimed that the aid package includes $9 billion for Gaza that will fund Hamas terrorists. Good argued that the Senate should have taken up a paid-for Israel bill five months ago to assist the ally, rather than burdening American taxpayers with the cost.
The RJC is not the only high-profile Republican group opposing Good, as the Republican Main Street Partnership also seeks to oust him. Good’s district supported former President Trump by over 8 points in 2020, and the primary for his seat is scheduled for June 18.
The RJC’s endorsement of McGuire marks a challenge to Good’s re-election bid, highlighting the growing divide within the Republican party over support for Israel and foreign aid.
