EMILY’s List recently made headlines by announcing that it was officially putting 14 potential running mates “on notice,” a tactic the organization has previously used to target vulnerable House Republicans on their stance regarding abortion. This time, however, the focus is on Trump’s potential vice presidential picks for the 2024 election.
In a press release, EMILY’s List emphasized the reason for the abortion issue in the upcoming election, stating that the GOP ticket, regardless of the vice presidential pick, poses a threat to reproductive rights.
The organization highlighted the anti-abortion stance of Trump and his potential VP shortlist, expressing concern over the impact on reproductive rights, including abortion, IVF, and birth control.
By putting these potential VP picks “on notice,” EMILY’s List made it clear that it sees Trump’s choice as secondary in determining the future of U.S. abortion policy, emphasizing its primary goal of preventing Trump’s return to the White House.
EMILY’s List President Jessica Mackler reiterated this stance, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to exposing the extremism of these potential Republican VP picks and preventing a national abortion ban.
The list includes Republican figures such as Ben Carson, Rep. Byron Donalds, Rep. Elise Stefanik, Sen. JD Vance, Kari Lake, Sen. Katie Britt, Gov. Kristi Noem, Sen. Marco Rubio, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and former presidential candidates Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis, Tim Scott, and Vivek Ramaswamy. Additionally, a mystery 15th potential VP candidate was included on the list.
The organization’s move has sparked reactions from various quarters, with Trump’s communications director dismissing EMILY’s List and questioning their credibility, particularly in light of including Gov. Ron DeSantis on the list.
As the 2024 election landscape continues to evolve, EMILY’s List’s stance underscores the ongoing debate surrounding reproductive rights and their role in shaping political dynamics.
