Isra Hirsi, daughter of Rep. Ilhan Omar, faced criticism after her involvement in Columbia protests, where she was arrested and suspended from school. Initially, she complained about being homeless and unable to get food. Her mother defended her, alleging that the protests were “co-opted” to discredit the activists, but provided no evidence.
Despite the backlash, Isra Hirsi continued to express grievances, painting the protesters as victims during an appearance on MSNBC. She criticized the criticism leveled against them, claiming hypocrisy and alleging mistreatment by counter-protesters.
A video clip circulated showing Isra Hirsi claiming to be a victim of a chemical weapons attack during the protests, which drew ridicule. However, the incident she referred to was likely a Jewish student’s use of harmless “novelty fart sprays,” which resulted in his suspension and a lawsuit against the university.
Isra Hirsi’s focus on perceived injustices faced by protesters overlooked instances of violence, anti-Semitism, and harassment directed at Jewish students on campus. The university even shifted to hybrid learning to alleviate tensions. Despite this, Hirsi described the protest camp as a form of “beautiful solidarity.”
Hirsi reiterated three demands: divestment from companies complicit in genocide, transparency in investments, and amnesty for suspended pro-Palestinian protesters. Her actions and statements mirrored her mother’s political activism, indicating a familial influence.
