Despite President Biden’s emphasis on climate change, a CBS News/YouGov poll released Monday indicates that only a fraction of Americans are well-informed about his administration’s efforts in this area.
While 45 percent of respondents consider climate change a very important issue, only 10 percent of those individuals claim to be well-informed about the Biden administration’s actions to address it.
Nearly half of those who view climate change as important admit to being uninformed or having limited knowledge about Biden’s initiatives, while 41 percent report having some awareness of the administration’s efforts.
Among those who prioritize climate change, 42 percent believe that Biden has not done enough to tackle the issue, with 26 percent feeling he has taken appropriate action, and 4 percent suggesting he has done too much.
Opinion is divided regarding whether respondents favor Biden’s or former President Trump’s climate policies, with 36 percent expressing support for Biden’s approach, 35 percent favoring Trump’s, and 29 percent favoring neither.
Additionally, over half of respondents believe that electing either Biden or Trump would have no impact on climate change.
Approximately 44 percent think Biden’s policies would not affect climate change, while 51 percent hold the same view about Trump’s policies. Only around 30 percent believe Biden’s policies would slow down climate change, while a similar percentage think Trump’s policies would accelerate it.
The poll coincides with Biden’s Earth Day address, during which he highlighted achievements such as establishing a Civilian Climate Corps and launching a $7 billion federal program to promote rooftop solar power. The administration has also advocated for transitioning from gas-powered to electric vehicles.
Conducted from April 16-19 among 2,230 U.S. adults, the CBS/YouGov poll carries a margin of error of 2.7 percentage points.
