President Biden’s willingness to debate former President Trump ahead of the upcoming election marks a remarkable shift in his stance. While Biden had previously been noncommittal about the idea, he expressed readiness to engage in a debate during an interview with Howard Stern on SiriusXM.
Despite some commentators advocating for Biden to skip the debates, citing concerns about normalizing Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, Biden signaled his openness to the idea. However, he emphasized that his decision to debate Trump would hinge on the former president’s behavior.
Democratic lawmakers have expressed mixed views on the matter, with some questioning the wisdom of engaging in a debate with Trump, given his unconventional approach and propensity for making outrageous statements. Nevertheless, they acknowledge that the decision eventually rests with Biden.
Trump, on the other hand, has been actively taunting Biden and calling for more debates. Despite not participating in the GOP primary debates for the 2024 election, Trump welcomed Biden’s willingness to debate him and extended invitations for a debate at his upcoming rally in Michigan or at the courthouse in New York City, where Trump is currently on trial.
Biden also took the opportunity during his interview with Stern to criticize the U.S. media for what he perceives as a lack of assertiveness in their coverage of Trump. He expressed concern that some in the media may be hesitant to challenge Trump, highlighting the importance of a free press in holding public figures accountable.
