House Democratic leadership has announced their decision to thwart an effort to remove House Speaker Mike Johnson from his position, countering threats from Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and other hardliners.
In a statement, the leaders declared their intention to table Greene’s Motion to Vacate the Chair, indicating that it would not succeed if invoked.

Greene, however, indicated her determination to proceed with the motion, emphasizing her belief in recorded votes to ensure transparency in Congress. She suggested that she would give Americans the opportunity to witness the “Uniparty” in action.
In response, Johnson defended his position, emphasizing the importance of a functioning Congress and his commitment to doing what he believes is right for the country. While he acknowledged the need for support from across the aisle, he stated that he had not requested assistance from Democrats.
Kentucky GOP Representative Thomas Massie, a supporter of Greene’s effort, viewed the Democrats’ endorsement of Johnson as a boost to their campaign to oust him. He suggested that the move would strengthen their efforts.

Meanwhile, Greene and Massie plan to address their campaign to remove Johnson at a news conference on Wednesday.
The decision by House Democratic leaders to quash the effort to remove Johnson comes as House Republicans indicate that the momentum behind the motion to vacate Johnson’s speakership has diminished. Republican representatives have described the threat as “dead,” with little discussion on the matter within their caucus.
