Walmart has announced the closure of all 51 of its healthcare centers across five states, as well as the termination of its virtual care services.
This decision comes after five years of operating the Walmart Health Centers, which launched in 2019 and offering a range of medical services, including primary and urgent care, dental work, and behavioral health services.
The company cited a lack of profitability due to challenging reimbursement environments and escalating operating costs for the closure. Despite the difficulty of this decision, Walmart aims to support affected patients, associates, and providers through this transition.
All impacted associates will be eligible to transfer to another Walmart or Sam’s Club location and will receive pay for 90 days. Those who do not transfer or leave after 90 days will be eligible for severance benefits.
Walmart will now focus on its pharmacy and vision center services, which will continue to offer immunizations, testing, and treatment services, as well as access to specialty pharmacy medication and care.
The company has expanded the clinical capabilities of its pharmacy services in recent years and sees growth opportunities in this area.
