Former President Barack Obama recently appeared on the “SmartLess” podcast, where he criticized his predecessor, Donald Trump, for his behavior and questioned why more Republicans didn’t speak out against him.
Obama noted that Trump’s actions didn’t surprise him, given his reputation in New York City, where he built his businesses and fame before entering politics. Obama pointed out that Trump wasn’t taken seriously by New Yorkers, who knew him as a businessman and didn’t lend him money or do business with him.
He expressed surprise that more Republicans didn’t draw boundaries and say “you can’t go that far” when Trump made controversial statements, such as praising Putin and questioning US intelligence agencies. The podcast episode, recorded in New York City on March 28, featured Obama alongside former President Bill Clinton and current President Joe Biden.
Obama’s comments come as Trump faces multiple legal battles, including a hush money trial in Manhattan, where he’s charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records.
Despite his roots in New York City, Trump has repeatedly attacked the city and changed his residency to Florida in 2019. Trump’s campaign has been reached for comment.
