The Japanese government has issued a strong rebuke to US President Joe Biden‘s recent comments, in which he labeled Japan as “xenophobic” alongside China and Russia.
Biden made the remarks at a campaign event, suggesting that the four economic powers were struggling due to their reluctance to accept immigrants. Japan’s government has called the characterization “unfortunate” and “misguided,” stating that the comments were not based on an accurate understanding of Japan’s policies.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Japanese government expressed its disappointment and frustration with Biden’s comments, which it believes do not reflect the country’s stance on immigration. The government has already conveyed its concerns to the White House and provided clarification on its policies, the statement said.
Biden’s remarks came as a surprise, given the recent diplomatic efforts between the two nations. Less than a month ago, Biden hosted a state dinner for Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, a rare gesture of high-level diplomacy.
The White House has since attempted to downplay Biden’s comments, with National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stating that the president was simply trying to emphasize the importance of immigration to the US.
According to Kirby, the president’s message was meant to highlight the US as a nation of immigrants, saying “it’s in our DNA.” Japan’s government has acknowledged this clarification, stating that it is aware of the US government’s explanation and appreciates the assurance that the comments were not intended to harm the Japan-US relationship.
Despite this, Japan’s government remains concerned about the implications of Biden’s comments, which it believes could have a negative impact on the country’s international reputation.
The government has reiterated its commitment to its immigration policies, which it believes are fair and humane, and has called for greater understanding and cooperation between nations on this issue.
