Conservative lawyer George Conway has weighed in on the ongoing hush money trial of former President Trump, stating that Hope Hicks’ testimony “absolutely” corroborates Michael Cohen’s story. Conway made his remarks on CNN’s “The Situation Room” with host Wolf Blitzer, highlighting the importance of Hicks’ testimony.
According to Conway, Hicks’ testimony confirms that Trump understood the payments made by Michael Cohen were on his behalf, prior to the 2016 election. This corroborates Cohen’s claims that Trump directed him to make hush-money payments to women who alleged affairs with Trump.
Conway emphasized that Trump’s knowledge of the payments is “devastating” and further supports Cohen’s story, which has been corroborated in numerous respects.
The hush money trial, which began last Monday, marks the first criminal trial of a former American president. Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records related to reimbursements to Cohen, who paid adult film actor Stormy Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet about an alleged affair with Trump, which he denies.
Cohen has consistently claimed that Trump directed him to make the hush-money payments, stating in 2018, “First of all, nothing at the Trump Organization was ever done unless it was run through Mr. Trump. He directed me to make the payments, he directed me to become involved in these matters.”
Hicks’ testimony took a dramatic turn on Friday when she discussed a call with Trump regarding Cohen’s payment to Stormy Daniels. Hicks seemed to question Trump’s claim that Cohen made the payment out of the goodness of his heart, calling it “out of character.” Her doubts further undermine Trump’s defense and support for Cohen’s version of events.
As the trial continues, Conway’s analysis highlights the importance of Hicks’ testimony and its implications for Trump’s defense. With multiple witnesses corroborating Cohen’s story, the case against Trump appears to be strengthening.
