Dasha Navalnaya, the daughter of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, accepted a posthumous award from the McCain Institute on Friday, honoring her father’s unwavering courage and dedication to a better Russia.
The Courage & Leadership Award, presented annually, recognizes an individual who has stood up for fundamental values and inspired the world through selfless acts of courage.
In her acceptance speech, Navalnaya described her father as an “extraordinarily courageous man” whose resilience, passion, and dedication to a better Russia were unwavering. She emphasized that the main difference between Putin and her father was Alexei Navalny’s belief in basic human dignity.
The McCain Institute’s award is given to individuals who have demonstrated personal courage in promoting human rights, humanitarian compassion, justice, freedom, and human dignity. The recipient is selected based on their acts of courage, and the institute hopes to inspire others to stand up for what is right.
Alexei Navalny’s death in February has been widely attributed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, with many world leaders, including President Biden, holding him responsible.
However, a senior U.S. intelligence official recently suggested that Putin likely did not order Navalny’s death, although he is still so much responsible for the circumstances that led to it.
President Biden has been vocal in his condemnation of Putin’s actions, stating that “Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death” and that it is “yet more proof of Putin’s brutality.” The international community continues to mourn the loss of Alexei Navalny, a champion of human rights and democracy, and to call for accountability for his untimely death.
