Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen (R) has announced that his state will not comply with the recent changes to Title IX made by the Biden administration, according to a report by The Nebraska Examiner on Friday. Pillen stated that protecting children and women’s athletics is his duty, and the new rules threaten women’s safety and their right to participate in women’s sports.

The Biden administration revealed the final set of changes to Title IX last month. The changes add protections for transgender students to the federal civil rights law on sex-based discrimination.

The changes will take effect in early August. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona stated that the regulations aim to ensure all students can access safe and welcoming schools that respect their rights.

However, Pillen’s statement is not an isolated one. Other Republican-led states, including Florida, Louisiana, Wyoming, South Carolina, and Oklahoma, oppose the new Title IX rules. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) recently stated that his state “will not comply” with the changes, calling them an attempt by President Biden to “rewrite Title IX.”

DeSantis emphasized that Florida will not allow men to participate in women’s activities and will fight against the changes. The Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ advocacy group, has criticized the opposition to the new rules, stating that politicians are choosing “theatrics and hateful rhetoric” over protecting students’ needs.

The U.S. Department of Education has clarified that all federally funded schools must comply with the new regulations. These regulations were crafted following a rigorous process to ensure that no person experiences sex discrimination in federally funded education. Failure to comply could result in a huge loss of funding, impacting schools’ ability to provide academic excellence.

The controversy surrounding the changes to Title IX highlights the ongoing debate over transgender rights and women’s sports. While some argue that the changes are necessary to protect transgender students, others believe they pose a threat to women’s athletics and safety. As the changes take effect in August, how states and schools will respond to the new regulations remains to be seen.
