A recent poll conducted by Decision Desk, HQ/News Nation, found that 46% of voters believe former President Trump is best suited to handle issues related to the US southern border, a crucial issue in the upcoming election.
In comparison, 26% think President Biden is the better candidate to address border issues, while 13% are unsure. The poll also revealed that 85% of GOP voters support Trump on immigration, while 61% of Democrat voters support Biden.
Immigration has become a key issue in the 2024 election, with many Americans considering it a top priority. According to Gallup, immigration has been the most important problem for Americans for three consecutive months, surpassing government, inflation, and the economy. However, the DDHQ poll found that inflation is still a primary concern for voters.
Republicans have been critical of the Biden administration’s handling of border issues, and Trump has used incendiary rhetoric about immigration on the campaign trail. Biden’s campaign has emphasized that “we cannot go back” to the Trump administration’s approach to immigration.
The poll also found that 60% of voters believe immigration has harmed the country, while 47% say it has affected their community negatively. Additionally, 63% of voters are concerned about immigrants voting illegally, despite research showing that noncitizen voting is extremely rare.
The poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters between April 16 and 17 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
